Bill with the last steelhead of the day

Bill from Indiana with some really nice steelhead on a cold windy day with very little boat traffic.

Recent rain and cool weather has brought pockets of steelhead up from the lower stretches of the river. Water levels and clarity are perfect holding around 3200 cfs with a moderate stain.

In years past, May has offered really nice steelhead fishing. Much of the boat traffic and fishing pressure tapers off after this past weekend’s trout opener, leaving pockets of steelhead available.

It doesn’t get much better than fishing steelhead in shorts and T-shirts with the upcoming warmer 70 degree weather. Also, the dry fly fishing for large trout is right around the corner as the water temps start to rise over the 50 degree point.

Black stoneflies and the epic gray drake hatch starts the second week of May and goes through mid June. During this time is your best opportunity to hook very large trout on the surface with dry flies. May and June offers some of the best dry fly fishing of the year on the Muskegon river.
