King Salmon Fishing, Muskegon River Newaygo, MI

One door opens as another closes………The transition from dry fly trout fishing to focusing our attention toward the Kings of the Muskegon river has begun!

Water levels have been low around 900 cfs and shot up to 1,160 today.  This recent weather trend of sunny hot days coupled with crystal clear low water hasn’t made things exactly easy for King fishing but, good news is on the way.  Deep pools on the Muskegon are stacked with very, very large King Salmon from Croton Dam down to Newaygo park.  Most of the fish we spot are upwards of 15 to 30lbs with the occasional…..”Oh my gosh size!”  The Kings of the Muskegon river are running very large this year.  Getting them on is one thing, getting them in the boat is by far another.

Regardless, get ready…..the Muskegon river is poised to explode with excellent fishing soon!  Look for the next good push of rain mixed with cooler days/nights to turn good fishing into great fishing.

Also realize, excellent trout fishing presents itself right now behind spawning salmon.  It’s not uncommon to catch some of the largest trout of the year gorging themselves on eggs behind these beds.
