Steelheading the Mighty MO (12/29/13)

Brent & his brother Andrew from Duluth, MN joined me for some winter steelhead fishing.  Here’s Brent with an awesome chrome bullet that smashed his bead head nymph.

Muskegon River Steelhead

The only request from Brent was to get his brother into steelhead, as he never caught one before.  Well, catch them he did.  Here’s Andrew with the best of the day, a 13lb, 30″ female.  Great steelie to start out with Andrew.  Hope you have many more to come!

30" 13lb Muskegon River Steelhead

Both Brent & Andrew did an excellent job handling the blistering runs, acrobatic jumps, and tippet breaking barrel rolls these steelhead performed.  Great job today guys!

13lb 30" Muskegon River Steelhead

It’s always nice to guide true anglers like Brent & Andrew who understand & appreciate the quality of trout & steelhead fishing we have here in Michigan.  Hats off to you guys!  Wished more people realized this world-class fishery we have here on the Muskegon river.

Andrew had it right after catching this really nice 15″ rainbow fat as a football…….”most anglers fish all day long just to land one of these!”

Muskegon River Rainbow Trout

Trout fishing the Muskegon river is outstanding right now.  The ones we’ve been catching past few weeks of trips have been some of the fattest trout I’ve seen to date on the Muskegon river.  Really looking forward to this upcoming trout season with dry flies!

Steelhead fishing remains strong although the cold front moving thru has put a momentary damper on the bite.  Look for steelhead fishing to turn back on after this extended cold streak moves through.  A few consistent warmer days coupled with some run off to raise river water levels will really turn the steelhead bite back on in the days to come!
