Here’s Pat (left) and his brother Joe with some really nice steelhead on a very bright, very sunny, warm spring day.

Winter like days in April to start, summer like like days to finish.  Just as previously spawned out steelhead move back to the lake, new steelhead make their way up the river system.

The Muskegon river is one of the longest spring run steelhead tributaries on the west coast of Michigan.  As spawned out steelhead make their way back to Lake Michigan, new steelhead migrate up the river system taking their place.  This process continues well into May.

Water levels have dropped around the 3500 cfs and very clear.  Water temps climbed to 47 degrees today.  Warmer water temps seemed to have put more steelhead on the move to traditional mid spring type runs on the Muskegon river.

One Response to Sun, Smiles, & Spring Steelhead

  1. We had a tremendous time fly fishing for steelhead under Jon’s terrific guide service! It was a little difficult locating the steelhead, but with Jon’s knowledge of the river, he often times knew where the steelhead might be hanging out, and many times he was spot on! My brother Joe as you can see caught 5 nice steelhead and we had a great time on the beautiful Muskegon. Jon also cooked us up a terrific grilled chicken lunch and it was simply an awesome time!

    Thanks Jon for great day!
