Just as winters thaw warms up the water temps in the early spring throwing the native trout into a feeding frenzy, so does the hot summer leading into earl fall as water temps start to cool causing the trout’s metabolism to increase and need to feed to increase throwing these native brown and rainbow trout into a massive feeding frenzy.
Early September is a great time to dry fly trout fish the Muskegon River as the oppressive heat of summer gives way to the cool nights of early fall sending these trout into a massive feeding frenzy as their bodies metabolism starts to equalize.
Just as the trout’s feeding activity increases with the cooler fall temps, so does the fly hatches with cinnamon caddis flies taking center stage for these hungry trout as the trout turn on that “feeding bag” trying to build up fatty deposits in their bodies to help them survive the cold winter.
The caddis fly hatch has been on fire recent days as active trout start to come out of their summer heat hibernation and start gorging on flies top water.
The dry fly bite for trout has been on fire past few days of early September as the trout have been rising of the magnificent caddis hatches developing throughout the days.
Nothing better for the traditional fly angler to throw a great cast, drift your fly down an active feeding lane of a big brown trout, and watch the brown take the fly only to errupt out of the water with your fly securely lodged securely in it’s jaw!
Fall is an excellent time of year to fish the Muskegon River. Massive trout go into feeding frenzies for fly hatches as they try to build body fat to get them trough winter. Enormous king salmon start to migrate up the river system looking to start their annual spawning ritual and fall steelhead along with lake run browns follow the king salmon up river feeding on their disloged salmon eggs. So many opportunites to experience incredible world-class fall fishing only the Muskegon River can give!
