It all starts with young juvenile steelhead 1.5 to 2 years old, 15 to 20-inch long, better known as Skippers. These young steelhead enter the river system first in front of the adult steelhead. The significance of the Skippers showing up is it’s the pre-curser to the fall steelhead run about to start.
These young Skippers show up first followed quickly by a push of adult steelhead migrating up the river system. So when you see your first Skipper you can bet the adult steelhead are soon to follow.
Here’s Steve from Grand Rapids, MI with a beautiful chromed out Skipper marking good things to follow with the start of the Fall Steelhead run in the upper reaches of the Muskegon River. Get ready for good things to come!
