The Chrome Are Coming!

The Chrome Are Coming!

Luke with an awesome spring steelhead

Here’s Luke from Boston with a fresh spring chrome hen that took an egg fly.

This hen is no “winter hold over.”  Fresh steelhead are on the move.  Water levels are good for this time of year holding around 4,100 cfs with a moderate to heavy stain depending what area of the river your fishing.

Rain in the forecast followed by mild air temps all next week means more steelhead will be entering the river system.  Water temps are climbing slowly.  37 degrees this morning peaking at 38 degrees this afternoon.  42 degrees is the magic number needed for steelhead to seek gravel.

Right now with the water temps still on the cold side despite the 60 degree days our success came from the deep slow moving holes.  Look for the transition from winter lies to spring runs / gravel to grow as we get closer to that magic 42 degree water temps!  All in all things are shaping up nicely for the spring run!!
