Fall Fly Fishing Is Upon Us On The Muskegon River!

Muskegon River King Salmon

Fall is an absolutely beautiful time of year to fish the Muskegon river here in Michigan.  Leaves are changing color, air and water temps are transitioning, and trout fishing  is picking up as the caddis fly hatch starts to explode. With it comes the best part of all as the yearly migration of king salmon and fall steelhead start to enter the river system.  Fishing options are endless.  Whether its a 30+ pound king salmon you seek ripping across the water, a fall steelhead burning your fly reel into its backing, or large size trout feeding top water on dry flies.  Fall fishing on the Muskegon river has a lot to offer.

Muskegon River Brown Trout

Early September through October offers some of the best fall dry fly fishing for trout as the cooler water and air temps produce some excellent caddis hatches sending the trout into an active feeding frenzy.  It doesn’t get much better than watching a 20+ inch trout smashing your dry fly top water as the fish rips into your backing on a light 5 weight fly rod.

Jordan with a 30 lb king Muskegon river king salmon

Mid September through early November offers the best King salmon fishing on the Muskegon with the peak of the run usually topping out the second week of October through the first week of November.  During this time frame, it’s not uncommon to hook up to 30lb kings.  If you never experienced the sheer power of these fish on light weight fishing gear, you have got to try it out!  King salmon fishing also offers a great opportunity to bring your kids along for a great experience outdoors hooking some of the largest big game fish on the Muskegon river.  The hook ups are continuous and the action is hot!  Fall salmon fishing is an excellent way to introduce your kids to the sport!
